Math Workshop for Incoming MBA Students

Save the date: Saturday, August 12, 2023 and Saturday, August 19, 2023
Time: 9 am to 12 pm

Co-hosted by two DeGroote professors, Will Huggins and Dr. Khalid Nainar, this half-day workshop will help prepare you for your first-year quantitative courses by exploring basic concepts in accounting, numeracy, finance, statistics, and economics. This session is optional but highly recommended for those students who do not have a Bachelor of Commerce background. 

Module 1: Introduction & Accounting: Exploring numbers, ethics, decision making, politics of number, profits vs. cash flows, and Part 1 of a mini case example 

Module 2: Numeracy & Finance: Exploring algebra, estimation, math symbols, equations as sentences, examples from finance (such as time value of money, net present value, discount rates), non-math finance, and Part 2 of the mini case example

Module 3:  Statistics & Economics: Exploring how math helps with distinction and modelling, the process of tests, probability, spurious relationships, marginal thinking and optimization, people and firms, what happens when optimizers meet, and macroeconomics.
